A very rare catalogue for the sale of building material from Parliament 'to clear the SIte for the New Houses of Parliament'.
This sale post-dates Charles Barry's successful selection following the competition to design a new Palace of Westminster. Ordered by 'the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Woods, Forests, Land Revenues, Works and Building', the sale included material from the 'Committee Rooms & Kitchen', various 'Refreshment Rooms' and the 'Speaker's House'. Slates, lead, rafters, windows, flooring, doors, gutters, pipes, chimneys, hearths, a fireplace as well as the 'immense quantity of sound brickwork' mentioned on the title.
Highlights - at least from a modern perspective - include lot 7, 'the lead flat ... 90 ft long, by 9 ft wide' with its counterpart (lot 8), lot 12, 'One 4-panelled door, vein marble chimney and hearth, skirting round room, three 12-light sashes in passage, two 6-light ditto, two 4-panelled doors and skirting in passage', lot 35, from the 'Speaker's House', a 'Splendid gothic bow window front in three compartments with twelve 3-light sashes in ditto with six squares of stained glass in ditto' &c.

Comprising Lead in Flats, Gutters and Pipes, Sisted Roofs, Sound Timber in Roofs, Joists, Girders, Floor Boards and Battens, Wainscot and other Sashes & Frames, Folding and other Doors, Stone Paving, Stoves & Ranges. Also An Immense Quantity of Sound Brickwork and numerous other Effects.'
