A fascinating pictorial guide to the Isle of WIght and an insight into the Victorian holiday.
An interesting tourist guide to the Isle of Wight, covering the towns and their more important buildings, chiefly designed for the affluent Victorian middle-class. The guide contains a short history of the island from its early significance as a staging post in the Cornish tin trade to the Continent and its conquest by Vespasian in 43 a.d. (it was then known as Vectis or Ictis) until the Governorship of Viscount Eversly. The guide is also filled with details of use to the tourist: a large number of walks and places of worship are described, details of 'Hackney Carriage Fares' are listed (as well as their 'General Regulations') and points of interest throughout the island are noted.
'The varying hills and valleys, sea and land, open and secluded spots, render the Isle of Wight, as has been well remarked, an epitome of England.' (From the 'Guide to the Isle of Wight').
