Alcune decorazioni di nobili sale ed altri ornamenti [with] Ornamenti diversi...incisi da Giacomo Mercoli
Albertolli, Giocondo
Milan. 1787 & 1782
The first work consists of large engravings of designs by Albertolli (1742-1839) for interior decoration, ceilings, furniture and metalwork, all in the distinctive neo-classical style which he developed in the 1770's while working under the Milanese state architect Giuseppe Piermarini at the Palazzo Ducale in Milan and the Villa Ducale at Monza. The plates illustrate examples of his work at both places and also at the Belgiojoso Palace in Milan. What makes this, and the second volume presented here (which also contains Albertolli's designs for Vanvitelli's pupil Piermarini) meritorious, is that they are based on his original design drawings for actual commissions, ranging from whole interiors to designs for a sofa and for a silver soup tureen. Albertolli simultaneously enjoyed widespread influence over younger artists and architects as Milan's leading teacher of decorative design.
