Paris. 1878

Liebert spent the majority of his career photographing the environs of Paris. He moved to Paris in 1863 after operating a photographic studio in gold-rush California. In 1872, he published an album of one hundred photographs titled Les Ruines de Paris et ses Environs 1870-71, depicting the destruction of buildings and monuments from the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. In 1878 he produced this portfolio of photos, offering a unique documentation of the Paris World Exhibition 1878 with pictures of the installations, of particular buildings and streets, of interiors and an aerial view. This was probably a presentation copy for an official visitor of the Exposition, i.e. Ellsworth.
