Art D'aujourd'hui. Bloc, André (Ed.)
Boulougne-sur-Seine. Architecture d'Aujourd'hui. 1949–1954
Sold
A scarce complete set of the review Art d'Aujourd'hui in the original wrappers and with the full complement of hors text plates.
The magazine was edited by sculptor and architect André Bloc with Edgar Pillet and Pierre Faucheux. Although it gave generous coverage to all aspects of contemporary art, its main concern was with European abstraction. Each issue carries reviews of the Paris exhibitions; several, usually double, issues are devoted to a single subject such as Cubism, Photography, Drawings of Children and Naive Artists or Painting in USA. Individual articles range from Tattooing & Poster art to Henry Moore and Julio Ganzalez. Art d'Aujourd'hui is also a particularly useful source of information on the minor artists of the period.
The set includes serigraphs and lithographs by and after Magnelli, Roger Chastel, Bloc (the editor), Gris, Hartung (his contribution signed in pencil), Léger, Ben Nicholson, Deyrolle, Sophie Tauber-Arp, E. W. Nay, Baumeister, Herbin, Jacques Villon and others.
The original wrappers feature a number of especially commissioned designs by artists such as Magnelli, Delaunay, Poliakoff, and Arp. Some of the early cover designs were based on readers' submissions, including a colour one from a young child. The publication of the five series was irregular and the aim of 12 issues a year was never accomplished. However this is a complete set of the 5 series with all of the hors texte plates present and including the unnumbered 'Numéro Spécial' for July 1951, 'Paris'.
[Le Fonds Paul Destribats 534 (incomplete)].
