Die Puppe. (Erinnerungen zum Thema Puppe)

Bellmer

(Carlsruhe). (Th. Eckstein). 1934
Sold
FIRST EDITION of Bellmer's earliest and rarest publication, with a signed presentation from Bellmer on the dedication leaf: 'Exemplaire / de / René de Solier / Hans / Bellmer / x / 26.11.53'. This copy is from the second issue from the early 1950s bound from the same sheets as the first.
He issued this work, with 10 original photographs, in 1934, just before he fled Nazi persecution. Few copies of this German edition are known - 50 copies has been posited as the issue, although there is no justification - and there are probably only about 10 copies in existence. The text is printed on rose paper and the original photographs are mounted on yellow paper.
'I tried to rearrange the sexual elements of a girl's body like a sort of plastic anagram. I remember describing it thus: the body is like a sentence that invites us to rearrange it, so that its real nature becomes clear through a series of endless anagrams.' Taken from Peter Webb's interview with Bellmer (The Erotic Arts, London 1975).
[Not in Parr & Badger, see vol. I, 106 - 107].
8vo. Leaf with printed dedication (Für / Ursula / N.) verso, title, half-title with vignette illustration, 5 leaves of text, printed recto and verso, verso of final leaf with vignette illustration, leaf with additional subtitle ('Die Entstehung der Puppe'), all on pink paper, 10 original photographs (each c.88 x 60 mm.) by Hans Bellmer mounted to yellow card, final leaf with vignette handprint and imprimatur verso, also on pink paper. Original publisher's marbled boards, pink printed title label to spine, pink endpapers.
