The wealth of material for this exemplaire unique is in four volumes: the book itself, in a binding by Creuzevault, contains all the etchings, including the planches refusées bound in at the rear of the volume, in three states; the second volume, which includes a letter from Flaubert to Chahine concerning production of the book, in a Creuzevault binding to match the first volume, contains all of Chahine's original drawings, sketches and designs for the work, each signed by him, as well as a design on silk; the third volume contains the plates in three states including counter proofs; the final volume, unbound, contains the suites of plates, again in three states, for the work.
