Complete set of the first series.

Galerie Contemporaine, a weekly revue which ran from 1876 to 1885 (many of the photographs were taken much earlier), is the principal publication that used the Woodburytype of photographic reproduction - in 1867 Goupil & Co of Paris acquired the Woodburytype patent rights for France, where the process was introduced as photoglyptie.

Galerie Contemporaine contains important photographic portraits of major figures of the 1870's and 1880's, and in doing so forms a vital visual record of the people who shaped the Second Empire in France.
The portraits are all of important figures of the age, be they writers, painters, sculptors, musicians, architects, actors, or politicians. From the world of literature this includes photographs of Baudelaire, Emile Zola, and Alexandre Dumas fils. Photographs of artists include portaits of Puvis de Chavannes, Delacroix, Ingres, Millet, Daumier, De Nittis, Bracquemond, Fortuny, Corot, and Monnier. Other figures photographed include Verdi, Eugène Clemenceau, Victor Hugo, Sarah Bernhardt, and Rossini.

The photographs in this set are in very fine condition, each mounted on original printed card.
8 vols. 4to. Over 250 mounted photographs, of which 126 are photographic portraits. Contemporary red half-morocco.
