(London). Bedford Lemere. 1892
Sold
Twenty-five albumen print photographs in sepia of the interior and gardens of Alfred de Rothschild's Halton House showing the house in its heyday.
Twenty of the photographs depict views of the interior including Smoking Room, Dining Room, Drawing Rooms (North and South), Lobby to the Winter Garden, Library, Billiard Room, Grand Staircase, Boudoir (the fireplace is reputed to have come from Marie Antoinette's boudoir at Versailles), Salon and Garden Entrance, together with 5 views of the garden, including a view of the house from the South-West.
The photographs capture the elegant opulence of Le Style Rothschild: elaborate furniture, ornate lamps , sculpture and objets d'art fill rooms decorated in luxurious fabrics. Tables are laden with folios and albumswhile landscapes and portraits are hung throughout the house. The entire effect is a fine example of high Victorian taste and demonstrates that the house was intended as much for the entertainment of others as for the satisfaction of its owner.
Halton House - one of eight houses owned by the de Rothschild family in the Vale of Aylesbury - was completed for Alfred de Rothschild in 1883; after his death in 1918 the contents were auctioned.
The photographers Bedford Lemere founded in the late 1860s were the leading architectural photographers of their period. Their work is a major archive for not only the grand houses and public buildings of the period from 1870 to 1945, they also recorded the construction and decoration of ocean liners.
