LA MODA ED I SUOI CAPRICCI. Almanacco per l'Anno 1829
.
Milan. Presso gli Editori / Pietro e Giuseppe Vallardi. 1829
Sold
A charming copy of a rare early Italian fashion almanac in contemporary red morocco.
Published at a time when Paris was pre-eminent in European fashion, the Vallardi brothers' almanach was aimed at a different specifically rich and interested market: that of Milan. The work divides the fashionable yearinto months and treats of both men and women's fashions for each monthly period with detailed descriptions in the text. The engraved plates depict a variety of hairstyles for women (the frontispiece), fashionable dress for men (4 plates), women (7 plates) and children (1 plate). The volume concludes with a directory of Milanese associated with fashion and divided into 'Mercanti di Moda e Modisti', 'Sarti e Sarte da Donna', 'Sarti da Uomo', 'Calzolaj', 'Parrucchieri', as well as parfumiers, glove-makers, hat-makers, jewellers and others in related fashionable fields.
The lavish binding of this copy: contemporary red morocco with elaborate gilt decoration, a matching slipcase and two griffons supporting an urn tooled in gilt to the spine, mark this as a likely presentation copy.
This work is rare with no copies appearing at auction; in addition we can locate no copies in libraries in the UK, US or elsewhere.
[Not in Colas; not in Lipperheide; not in Brunet].
