The Gardens of England
Brooke, E. Adveno
London. Published by T. McLean, 26, Haymarket. 1857
Sold
A rare copy of Brooke's outstanding colour views of great aristocratic English gardens.
Dedicated to the Duchess of Sutherland, Brooke's beautiful work depicts and describes 19 of the most extensive and beautiful English gardens from the nineteenth century. Among those depicted in glorious and vivid colour are Trentham (seat of the Duke of Sutherland), Bowood (seat of the Marquis of Lansdowne), Alton Towers (Earl of Shrewsbury), Woburn Abbey (Duke of Bedford), Eaton Hall (Marquis of Westminster), Holkham House (Earl of Leicester), Castle Howard (Earl of Carlisle), Wilton House (Earl of Pembroke) and Harewood House (Earl of Harewood).
A second volume of The Gardens of England was proposed and intended (see Preface) but never issued.
[PROVENANCE: Engraved pictorial bookplate of Annie Cowdray (née Anne Cass, wife of Weetman Pearson, Viscount Cowdray) to front pastedown].
'This volume is an attempt to realize a fair pictorial epitome of the horticultural beauties our country contains. It is the result of years of labour, and, it is almost needless to add, has been completed at no small trouble and expense. That such a work is required few will venture to deny, but if proof be needed, it will be found in the intense interest already displayed in the prosecution of this book, by the best able to judge its value, and by the noble proprietors of the gardens herein depicted.' (From the Preface).
[Abbey Scenery 392; not in Tooley].
