A rare unsophisticated set of views of the Thames by Baynes showing Trench's proposed embankment.

The first proposal to embank the Thames came from Sir Christopher Wren in the 1660s before the idea was revived in the nineteenth-century by Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Frederick Trench, M. P. His ideas - depicted here in fine lithograph views by Baynes - although with the support of a number of influential people, was blocked by various parties with interests in the river. Trench's proposal, built out into the river to avoid land ownership problems, would have created a stylistically uniform architectural scheme from Westminster Bridge to London Bridge.
Oblong folio. (280 x 685 mm). Sheet with printed title and text recto and verso, ten sheets with lithograph by Baynes printed by Hullmadel recto only to form panorama, folding map, 'Plan of the River Thames &c.' by T. Dighton.
