Mayer's three works on the Middle East in stunning contemporary red morocco.

A student of Piranesi, Luigi Mayer (1755 - 1803) was part of the entourage of Sir Robert Ainslie, ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1776 - 1792. These (and most other of his works) were commissioned by Ainslie and feature Mayer's own illustrations taken from Ainslie's collection. The works were published separately before being issued together after the publication of the Views in Palestine in 1804.

'Lowndes states that the text was in English and French, but the position seems in fact to be, as stated by Brunet, that Bowyer published a separate edition in French with the title dated 1802 [as here], and that in some cases copies are found with the English and French texts brought together. In the case of the Palestine and Caramania ... there was probably no separate French edition, and the English and French texts are together ... '. (Abbey).
