Blaue Berg

Bern. 1977–1986

After he moved his studio in the early 1970s from the rural Canton of Bern to Bern's Old Town, the Swiss artist Cllaude Sandoz founded, with his friend, writer, Tobias A. Biancone, the magazine Der blaue Berg (The blue mountain). The title owes much to Mount Pilatus being the mythical emblem of Central Switzerland, but naturally it also refers to earlier avant-garde journals such as Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc's almanac Der Blaue Reiter. Sandoz's magazine suggests no such manifesto, but instead offers writers and artists a platform for exchange. The magazine runs to a total of 14 issues, providing a platform for not only less well-known Swiss and German artists but also established names such as Meret Oppenheim, Rolf Iseli or Ueli Berger. Indeed the thiteenth issues concentrates on the vibrant art scene of Cologne, and includes contributions by Blume, Kippenberger, Klauke, C.O. Paeffgen, and Sigmar Polke. Other issues are thematically arranged: Phantastisches (no.4), Erotisches (No.6), Welten (No.7), Raume (No.8) etc.
The issues were published in editions of between 50 to 650 copies, with the earlier issues now hard to find.
