An instant success on its first performance, with its allusion to contemporary politics and the Popish Plot, Otway's 'Venice Preserv'd' was translated into almost every European language and was performed with regularity until the nineteenth-century.

Printed title, leaf with the 'Epistle Dedicatory to Her Grace the Dutchess of Portsmouth', two leaves with the 'Prologue', 'Epilogue' and dramatis personae and Otway's tragedy on following leaves. Title and preliminaries possibly supplied from another copy, B4 - F1 spotted, paper flaws to outer corners of I4 and K1. Sheet size: 220 x 165 mm. Modern green morocco-backed green cloth boards, title gilt to spine, marbled edges.
