Florence. 'The Mask' Offices, Arena Goldoni. Mar 1908–Oct / Nov / Dec 1929
Sold
The complete series of Edward Gordon Craig's extensive Modernist theatrical periodical The Mask.
One of the most important theatre periodicals of the century, in which Craig established his 'new art of the theatre'. At the same time a magnificent production, printed on fine Italian paper in unusual typography with hundreds of woodcuts and engravings by Craig and others.
Contributions are mostly by Edward Gordon Craig himself, under a variety of (no less than 60) pseudonyms, here detailed on a slip with the note 'these are listed in Craig's copy'. Other contributions by Yeats, Oscar Wilde, G. Bernard Shaw, Max Beerbohm, Isadora Duncan, etc. with extensive and detailed articles on a wide variety of subjects connected to the stage including its architecture, perspective, history and so on.
Also included with this set is Craig's scarce 1913 pamphlet 'A Living Theatre. The Gordon Craig School' (pp. 73, (vii) with numerous monochrome illustrations).
'The Mask always inspires me ... it creates a vague vision of a new sort of joyous, over flowing dramatic art. No sort of criticism is any use to an artist but technical criticism ... criticism at once technical and philosophical, and that is what The Mask gives one.' (W. B. Yeats quoted on the rear wrapper of Vol. 4, No. 2).
