Outlines of Figures, Landscape, and Cattle, Etched by T. Rowlandson, for the Use of Learners
Rowlandson, Thomas
London. S. W. Fores. 1790–1792
Sold
A good unsophisticated set of Thomas Rowlandson's outline engravings of English life and scenes.
Rowlandson's 'Outlines' was issued in four separate parts, each with four separate plates, between 1790 and 1792. The copy presented here features stab holes for stitching and the leaves were presumably stitched together and held within the extant original part wrapper; the original label for the wrapper has been altered by hand at an early date to reflect the content: 'No:' includes an inserted 'S' and '4' (the part number) has been altered to '1 to 4'.
The etchings themselves are each composed of a multitude of smaller images: domestic scenes, country scenes, lovers' scenes, groupings of horses and cattle, coaching, sailing, boxing, groups of ladies and dandies, soldiery and so on, most usually as small vignettes but also with larger landscapes, views of rivers and inns &c. all rendered with Rowlandsons' particular skill.
