Neodada / Pop / Decollage / Kapit. Realismus. 16. September bis 5. November 1964

Richter, Polke, Vostell, et al

Berlin. Galerie René Block. 1964
An excellent example of the very scarce first René Block catalogue with the original announcement card.

René Block opened his gallery, the Galerie René Block, at Frobenstraße on 15th September 1964 with the vernissage for the group exhibition 'Neodada Pop Decollage Kapit[alistischer]. Realismus'. The participating artists (see below) had all, with the exception of Sigmar Polke and Horst Hödicke, exhibited elsewhere, but the show was highly important for Polke (who exhibited the two paintings 'Herr Kluncker' and 'Doppelportrait' with the latter illustrated in this catalogue) and indeed for Gerhard Richter. Richter's 'Frauenkopf' is illustrated in the present catalogue, although he submitted his paintings 'Philipp WIlhelm' and 'Stukas'. The rear cover advertises an exhibition for November and December by Josef Beuys, but the subsequent exhibition was also for Richter, one of his earliest solo shows, and had the title 'Bilder des Kapitalistischen Realismus'.

The invitation / announcement card, a sheet of red card with printed text in black recto only (147 x 104 mm), for the opening of the exhibition, and, indeed the Galerie René Block is also included. The typography matches that of the catalogue itself but includes the additional information that 'Die erste demonstrative Ausstellung wird von Heinz Ohff eröffnet'.

The participating artists were: Wolf Vostell (his 'Mach mal Pause' is illustrated in the catalogue), Gerhard Richter (credited as 'Gerd' - 'Frauenkopf' illustrated), Lothar Quinte (two different 'Zeitungsüberdruck' works illustrated), Sigmar Polke (Doppelportrait' illustrated), Siegmund Lympasik, Konrad Lueg ('Fußballspieler' illustrated), Manfred Kuttner ('Spielautomat II' illustrated), Herbert Kauffmann('CARO AS' illustrated), Horst Hödicke ('ATA' illustrated) and Klaus P. Brehmer ('Interieur II' illustrated).

OCLC lists examples of this uncommon catalogue at MoMA, the Met, Princeton, the Clark Institute and Johns Hopkins in the US as well as an example at Stuttgart's Staatsgalerie; it is unclear whether any of these examples also include the invitation as for the present example.
