'Oh, the Grand Old Duke of York' was published by the duo of Gilbert (Gilbert Proersch, born 1943 in the South Tyrol) and George (George Passmore, born 1942 in Deorn [sic], England). A flipbook, the work depicts the artists descending a flight of steps, and, when reversed, the artists walking backwards up the same flight of steps.
The first page of the book bears a transcript of the nursery rhyme 'Oh, the Grand Old Duke of York'. The German text, printed after the work includes an introduction / postface and a critical essay 'Gilbert & George (die intelligentesten, faszinierendsten, ernsthaftesten und schonsten Kunstler, die Ihr je gesehen habt)' by Barbara M. Reise. Text - other than nursery rhyme - in German.
