Concetto Spaziale
Fontana, Lucio
Venice. Edizioni Galleria il Cavallino. 1966
An unrecorded silver variant of Lucio Fontana's leporello artist book of hole-punched metal sheets.
From the edition limited to 200 copies, signed by the artist.
Fontana's legendary leporello 'Concetto Spaziale' printed / manufactured by Sergio Tosi for Carlo Cardazzo's Edizioni Galleria il Cavallino is composed of thin sheets of folded metal foil within vinyl-covered boards with punched holes as per Fontana's scheme. This copy, clearly a variant example, is composed of silver, rather than the usual gold sheets, but is otherwise identical. It is less clear whether the present example represents a trial or a proof but the numbering suggests the former. We have been unable to trace any other silver examples.
This leporello forms part of Fontana's 'Metalli' (metals), his works made exploring sheets of metal, usually gold, silver or bronze, commenced in New York in the early 1960s. While his 'Metalli' are most often slashed, this leporello artist book features a series of punched holes which allude too to another part of Fontana's oeuvre, his 'Buchi' (holes).
