The first edition, first issue, completely unsophisticated, of Thomas Hardy's tragic novel of love, redemption and loss.
From the edition limited to 1,000 copies; a further 500 copies, the second issue, were published in February 1892.
Thomas Hardy's novel was first issued serially between July 4th and December 26th in 1891 in 'the 'Graphic' (with other chapters in the 'National Observer' and 'Fornightly Review' 'as episodic sketches') in a bowdlerized version; this edition represents its first appearance in book form, for which Hardy restored the original text and plot.
This first issue is characterised by the following points: the date 1891 to the verso of the titles; invol. I, p. [v], line 12, 'have it said'; vol. II, p. 58, line 4, 'Valasquez'; p. 155, line 21, 'seampstress'; p. 199, p. 192 'Chapter XXV' (for XXXV); Vol. III, p. 112, line 24, 'are ye doing'.
In good unrestored condition; spines a bit darkened and some marginal foxing.
