Emile Boilvin's etchings were produced as illustrations for Flaubert's first novel, Madame Bovary. First published in two volumes 1857 by Michel Lévy Frères, Boilvin's etchings were produced in 1876 to add to the edition issued by Lemerre in 1874; the series presented here were issued later, in 1883.
