(Marx, writing in the Préface to vol. I).

5 vols. Folio. (405 x 300 mm). Each vol. with printed part wrapper, half-title, title, list of plates and list of artists and 240 colour lithograph plates numbered 1 - 240, each with guardleaf (plate 135 present in two states including 'Specimen'), as well as the 16 unnumbered 'primes', extra for subscribers, each plate with the publisher's decorative blindstamp. (Sheet size: c.398 x 290 mm). Contemporary red straight-grained morocco-backed marbled boards, gilt title and elaborate gilt decoration to spines, original publisher's printed wrappers for each year preserved.
