Bok 2b
Rot, Diter. (Dieter Roth)
(Reykjavik). (Printed by Prentsmi∂ju Jóns Helgasonar for forlag ed). 1961
Sold
Dieter Roth's early Op-Art / concrete poetry artist book.
From the edition limited to 100 copies; Dobke suggests that approximately 10 copies were destroyed.
Dieter Roth's development of his 'puzzles' methodology in the early 1960s was to have a considerable effect on his artist books. Roth produced sets of identical elements such as plates in square format with printed parallel lines which could be arranged and rearranged by the viewer or user and for his early artist books - he described them as both 'Op-Art' and as 'concrete poetry' while maintaining that the works were independent of both movements. The books 'Bok 2', 'Bok 2a', 'Bok 2b', 'Bok 4a' and 'Bok 5' all relate to Roth's 'puzzles' methodology although for these artist books it is Roth himself who makes the alterations and manipulations. The artist first created a printing plate, of, for example, a striated pattern of parallel horizontal and vertical lines, this plate is then rotated, mirrored, overlapped, juxtaposed and so on, to create new images and new plates.
