'Limbour's first book of poems, Soleils bas, was published by Masson's dealer, Henry Kahnweiler. For this Masson undertook his first prints ... The idea that Masson had in this first as well as his subsequent illustrated books for Kahnweiler - one a year until 1928 - was to make a counterpoint to the images of the poets ... Faced with the task of making these illustrations in the 'noble' medium required by Kahnweiler, Masson recounted that he taught himself by reading a book on etching. There has been some question as to whether these illustrations are etchings as described on the title page or drypoints as mentioned in the colophon after use of the word 'gravures'. It appears that Masson made a rather lightly etched plate and then went over his line with drypoint.' (Cramer).
