A scarce New York edition of William Strang's original etchings for 'Paradise Lost'.

From the edition limited to 150 numbered copies.

These illustrations appear to have been printed first in London in 1895, as per the Nimmo imprint of Strang's etched title, before they were issued again by Arnold the following year with both London and New York imprints. Printed at the Ballantyne Press, Edinburgh for the text and F. Goulding, London for Strang's original etchings.

Strang's original etchings are titled as follows: 'Portrait of John Milton'; 'Milton Playing to His Daughters'; 'Satan RIsing from the Burning Lake'; 'Sin and Death at the Gates of Hell'; 'Hapy State of Adam and Eve'' 'Adam and Eve Entertain Raphael'; 'The Creation of the World'; 'The Creation of Eve'; 'Eve Tempted by Satan in the Form of a Serpent'; 'Adam Rejects the Condolement of Eve'; 'Michael Sets Before Adam a Vision' and 'Adam and Eve Expelled from Paradise'.
[26 leaves]. Folio. (388 x 290 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Milton, engraved title by Strang (with imprint 'London / John C. Nimmo / MDCCCXCV'), printed title in red and black with justification and printer's credit verso, leaf with list of illustrations and Milton's text (the 'Argument' for each book barring III and VI) illustrated with 10 original etchings by William Strang, all on laid paper and window-mounted in larger leaves of white card as issued facing a printed title for each. Original publisher's red cloth-backed cloth boards, titles and illustration after Strang to front cover, title gilt to spine.
