4'Z'ARTS. (Quatr'z'Arts). Poster / Affiche: A Series of 8 proofs for the 1925 (22 Juin) Bal des 4'Z'Arts / Quatr'z'Arts
Sardnal, Théo
Paris. (Atelier Perret). 1925
A group of original material for Théo Sardnal's Assyrian fantasy for the Bal des 4'z'Arts or Quatr'z'Arts: proofs in various colours, transfer drawings, hand-coloured trials and other material.
The 'Bal des Quat'z'Arts' (or 4'Z'Arts as here or Quatr'z'Arts) was organised annually for students of architecture, painting, sculpture and engraving at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. 1922 saw the revival of the ball after the war years. Sarndal's original design (we have been unable to determine if the poster was that realised for the ball), an Assyrian / Babylonian fantasy with stylised naked figures (the female figure in the foreground obscuring much of the male figure behind) above a high-spirited parade of celebratory figures all within a frame. The final printed text ''4'Z'Arts 1925 / PRIXDE / DECERNEA / A BABYLONE / LE 22 JUIN 1925' is beneath.
Four of the proofs are before the printed text and four include the text; the drawings and proofs are as follows:
- transfer drawing in black ink on calque paper (415 x 375 mm);
- transferred image / proof on thick gold card (430 x 318 mm) with extensive retouching in black ink by hand;
- proof in gold and black on cream paper (552 x 376 mm) with extensive retouching and shadowing in grey ink by hand;
- proof in black on cream paper (552 x 376 mm);
- proof in black with letters on cream paper (508 x 380 mm) the figures with extensive and delicate colouring in watercolour by hand;
- proof in sanguine with letters on cream paper (452 x 326 mm);
- proof in black with letters on cream paper (514 x 374 mm);
