Ovide: L'Art d'Aimer. / P. Ovidii Nasonis Artis Amatoriae

Maillol, Aristide. Ovid

Paris. Freres Gonin. 1935
A superb copy of Maillol's beautiful illustrations for Ovid with the discrete suite in sanguine.

From the edition limited to 275 numbered copies on papier pur chanvre fabriqué à la main, signed in pencil by Maillol; this copy also includes the additional suite of original lithographs printed in sanguine, each signed by Maillol with his monogram in sanguine and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil.

For Maillol's 1926 collaboration with the Cranach Press and the Inselverlag for the illustration of Virgil's Eclogues and Georgics, he and his nephew Gaspard, 'developed a special hand-made paper in a workshop at Montval, France'. The same process was used for the paper of the present edition (i.e. 'papier pur chanvre fabriqué à la main ... d'après les procédés d'Aristide et Gaspard Maillol') although now manufactured by Canson & Montgolfier rather than the two Maillols themselves.

'The sculpturesque nudes of Maillol's lithographs are closely related in style and spirit to his monumental carved figures.' (Eleanor Garvey).
