Multiples. The First Decade

Tancock, John L

Philadelphia. The Falcon Press [for] Philadelphia Museum of Art. Mar–Apr 1971
A very fine example of this multiple / catalogue / book object with the printed obi and the fasteners intact.

A remarkable exhibition catalogue / multiple composed of doubled leaves of colour paper (red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple) with monochrome illustration on glossy white stock. The front and rear covers feature a fastener system (as per the justification 'Snaps were affixed by French Button Works, Inc., Philadelphia'), which when fastened the book transforms the book into its own sculptural object multiple.

From the edition limited to 4,000 copies: 3,000 copies as a Museum edition and 1,000 copies as a trade edition.

The ground-breaking 'Multiples. The First Decade' exhibition was held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 5th March to 4th April, 1971. The focus was broad and over 130 artists exhibited their work.

'This catalogue was conceived and designed by Eugene Feldman, and printed and crash-bound at The Falcon Press, Philadelphia.' (From the justification).
[55 doubled leaves of paper + 20 leaves of plates]. 8vo. (228 x 142 mm). Printed title with publication credits and copyright verso, three leaves with 'Preface' by Evan H. Turner (Director of the Museum) and 'Foreword' by Tancock and catalogue essay and catalogue entries with 20 leaves of glossy paper with 65 monochrome illustrations, final leaf (rear wrapper) recto with production credits and justification; printed text on doubled leaves of thick colour Carrara and Sonata paper, illustrations on Kromekote.
