Fünfzehn Facsimiledrucke
Kubin, Alfred
Munich. Hans von Weber. 1903
Kubin's first independent publication, and also the first publication by Hans von Weber.
From the edition limited to 1,000 copies; a further 100 copies, each signed and numbered by the artist, were also produced.
Alfred Kubin (1877 - 1959) was an Austrian artist and writer known for macabre graphic work which explores the dark realms of the human subconscious and the complexities of the spirit and animal worlds. The work of Expressionists and Symbolists alike, namely Odilon Redon, Edvard Munch, James Ensor and Max Klinger were all important discoveries to the artist when he was enrolled in the Munich Academy in 1899. Arthur Schopenhauer's writings may also have a strong influence. The present 15 print-facsimilies are taken from pen and ink drawings with an impressive tonal range well suited to their unflinching subject matter, where the theme of suffering presides. The aquatints of Goya and Klinger were important precedents.
According to Raabe, the alternative title page was only added to part of the edition. The prints were made in the art institute of J. B. Obernetter, Munich.
The prints are titled as follows:
1. 'Das Menschen Schicksal'
2. 'Die Stunde der Geburt'
3. 'Der Angstschrei'
4. 'Das Pendel'
5. 'Der Schwachling'
6. 'Macht'
7. 'Die Epidemie'
8. 'Hungersnoth'
9. 'Der Krieg'
10. 'Nach der Schlacht'
11. 'Wissenschaft'
12. 'Das Grausen'
13. 'Der besten Arzt'
14. 'Die Todesstunde'
15. 'Vergessen-Versunken'
'Mit den vorliegenden Blattern tritt der junge, österreichische Künstlerphilosoph Alfred Kubin, dessen verschiedene Austellungen in Berlin, Muchen, berechtigtes Aufsehen erregten, zum ersten Male vor eine breitere Offenlichkeit. Es war nicht leicht, aus seinen vielhundert Arbeiten eine passende Auswahl zu treffen, um die Individualitat des Kunstlers klar und ganz erkennen zu lessen.' (From the Foreword).
'Durch alle seine Blatter sieht sich die tiefschmerzliche Auffassung des Lebens in seiner qualvollen Tragik.' (Through all of its pages the deeply painful conception of life is seen in its agonizing tragedy). (From the Foreword).
