Erna Schilling's very fine presentation copy of this very scarce catalogue for the 1920 exhibition of Kirchner's graphic work.
Erna Schilling (1884 - 1945), was a dancer and Kirchner's preferred model after the pair met in Berlin in 1911 / 1912. After Kirchner's breakdown in 1915 Schilling, now his companion, managed Kirchner's affairs and moved with him to Switzerland in the 1920s. Kirchner proposed to Schilling in the late 1930s shortly before the artist's suicide.
Kirchner's presentation is in grey / blue ink to the title: 'für Erna - Ernst.'
The exhibition was held in January and February 1920 at the Ludwig Schames Gallery in Frankfurt. The catalogue consists of three original woodcuts by Kirchner, a cycle of poems by Carl Theodor Bluth, the text by Eberhard Grisebach on Kirchner's graphic work, as well as the catalogue of the exhibited works - lithographs (76 were exhibited), etchings (63 were shown) and woodcuts (85 were included) and also drawings and watercolours (39 were also exhibited) - with numerous illustrations.
Kirchner's original woodcuts are as follows:
- 'Titelblatt Grafik E. L. Kirchner' (180 x146 mm; block: 283 x 224 mm), printed in black to the front cover;
- 'Titelblatt für Karl Theodor Bluth Hymnus' (170 x 103 mm; block: 284 x 224 mm), on page 9 in the present catalogue, published too under the title 'Der Maler' in 'Karl Theodor Bluth, Dichtungen', Leipzig, 1923;
- 'Der Garten der Irren' (74 x 74 mm; block: 284 x 224 mm), on page 14 in the present catalogue, published too in Georg Heym's 'Umbra Vitae' illustrated by Kirchner, Munich, 1924.
Kirchner's catalogue is scarce: we locate two copies in Germany (at the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek in Weimar and Wurzburg), three copies in Switzerland (the Kunsthalle and the Universitätsbibliothek in Basel and the Kantonsbiblothek Graubünden in Chur), and five copies in the US (at MoMA, the Getty, Northwestern, Virginia and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art).
