A scarce example of Yoko Ono's list of works / catalyst for works / work in itself 'ONO'S SALES LIST'.

Headed 'ONO'S SALES LIST' and with a copyright notice ('These Works (c)copyright 1965 by Yoko Ono') and the direction 'orders & inquries to Yoko Ono, rm711, 119w57th st, nyc 10019 usa', the list details 15 sections lettered 'A' to 'O' each consisting of works by Ono, many a concept only, all with prices. The works available represent a remarkable snapshot of Ono's already considerable oeuvre and are revealing of her practise, its humour and satiric intent and of her sources of inspiration. The majority of these works did not exist except in ovo and the act of reading the list and, indeed, the act of ordering, enabled the actual creation of the works.

Among many others the following are listed: 'B. SOUNDTAPE of the SNOW FALLING at DAWN', '25¢ per inch'; 'C. TOUCH POEMS', 'priced according to material ... '50 -to 0,000'; 'D. Machine types' including 'CRYING MACHINE - machine drops tears and cries for you when coin is deposited', 'ETERNAL TIME [machine] - a beautiful ETERNAL TIME CLOCK that keeps eternal time'; 'E. Architectural Works *(priced according to contractors' arrangements and cost of property)' including 'a. LIGHT HOUSE - a house constructed of light from prisms, which exists in accordance with the changes of the day'; 'G. GARDEN SETS' including 'b. a deep hole fr the clouds to drip in'; 'I. Of the works that did in fact have a physical existence, 'N. Books' includes the first edition of Ono's 'Grapefruit', the Wunternaum Press edition published in Tokyo in 1964, descibed here as 'a limited edition of 500 copies, in English & Japanese, over 200 compositions in Music, Painting, EVent, Poetry, and Object, since 1951'. A second edition is announced as 'GRAPEFRUIT II' with 'over 200 compositions not published in GRAPEFUIT, in Music, Painting, Event, Poetry, and Object, (including TOUCH POEMS), to be published in 1966'; this edition did not appear in the following year as announced - the year that Ono met John Lennon - but had to wait until 1970.

As indicated above, 'ONO'S SALES LIST' was issued in an edition of 200 copies that were distributed at Ono's performances and events. This copy was acquired at the Judson Gallery 1966 during 'The Stone', the 'collaborative environmental performance' by Ono, Anthony Cox, Jeff Perkins, Michael Mason and Jon Hendricks; Ono's 'Bag Piece' is also performed.

'Her instruction and performance pieces explored the limits of 'painting', and toyed with the notion that thoughts can act as art objects in themselves. The theme of “Do It Yourself” would continue to be central to Ono’s work, work in which Ono relinquishes control to of the artwork to the viewer, often seeking to instigate creative mental activity in the minds of others.' (Taken from 'Yoko Ono 'Grapefruit' at Stendhal Gallery)
