ARP 1: Prapoganda und Arp. (Proof for the Cover of'ARP 1' (MERZ 6) with Alternate Colour Scheme)
Arp, Hans. Kurt Schwitters
Hanover / Zurich. Merzverlag / Redaktion des Arpverlages. 1923, oktober
A very scarce proof of the cover for 'ARP 1: Prapoganda und Arp'.
'ARP 1: Prapoganda und Arp' was the rear part (see below) of Kurt Schwitters' 'MERZ 6: Jmitatoren watch step!', the sixth number of Schwitters' eclectic Hanover dada review. For the published issue of the review the titles (for both covers / parts) were printed in black on a blue ground and the ARP 1' cover featured a headline detailing its inclusion in the MERZ series and indicating some of the content. Other proofs are know on yellow stock also with the titles in red.
Arp's text reads as follows: 'ARP / 1 / Prapoganda / und Arp / die vier jahreszeiten / des tages sind / pisseminuit / pissematin / pissemidi / und / pissor / H. A.'
The pagination throughout the published issue of 'MERZ 6 / ARP 1' is continuous but 'MERZ 6' (pp. 57 - 64) runs from the front cover to the centre of the issue where the text is then inverted; the rear cover is an additional front cover - for which this is a proof - with the title 'ARP 1: Prapoganda und Arp' (pp. 49 - 56) and the text runs as usual until it reaches the centre spread where it is then inverted. Given that this is an issue of 'MERZ', and that 'MERZ' features continuous pagination throughout the issues, it seems that Schwitters is both subverting his own publication and beginning a new one with the title 'ARP'; given that 'ARP' runs on in pagination from the previous issue of 'MERZ', it also appears that Schwitters is giving priority to his new project and his friend.
