Un Soupçon. Poème de Paul Eluard, Illustré de Pointes Sèches par Guino, Mis en Lumière par Iliazd
Guino, Michel. Eluard, Paul
Paris. Le Degré Quarante et Un. 1965
A beautiful example - with rare proofs - of Paul Eluard's 'Un Soupçon' illustrated by Michel Guino and 'mis en lumière' by the typographer / poet Iliazd.
From the edition limited to 81 copies, with this one of 47 on 'Japon Impérial', signed by Guino in pencil and with the monogram of Iliazd in red pencil.
This copy includes two rare proofs, trials for the bifolia numbered 13 and 14, printed on single sheets of thinner japon matching the size of the leaves for the book, that for number 13 with an alternate colour scheme for the illustration and marked 'essai couleur 23565' in pencil in Iliazd's hand; that for number 14 with various trials for the position of the letters in the mise en page and marked 'essai 23365' in Iliazd's hand.
Eluard's short poem, with a single line of verse printed in capitals in different colours to accompany each illustration, reads as follows: 'Un Soupçon /se balançait légère / riait légère / sautait légère / tombait légère / riait légère / fuyait légère / rêvait légère / mangeait légère / dormait légère / tissait légère / rêvait légère / luttait légère / tombait légère / se relevait légère / il l'aimait avant de la connaître'.
'In Un Soupçon, a musical scale-like design of type playfully mimics the nuances of Paul Eluard's melodic poem.' (Isselbacher, Iliazd and the Illustrated Book).
