Kirchner's own copy, signed beneath the cover woodcut and annotated by him, of the catalogue for the second of his exhibitions at Kunsthandlung Ludwig Schames in Frankfurt.
The catalogue appears to differ from other cited examples in featuring a second woodcut (i.e. Dube 737) to the rear cover, perhaps suggesting that Kirchner retained a proof example for himself; this second woodcut was used for the front cover of the 1920 Schames catalogue of Kirchner's prints and works on paper.
This second exhibition of Kirchner's at Kunsthandlung Ludwig Schames was held in February / March 1919. The catalogue details 50 paintings exhibited in four rooms together with four sculptures with texts by Kirchner himself and Botho Graef.
Kirchner has signed the cover woodcut in pencil beneath the print and inscribed the title with the note 'Bitte um Rückgabe - E. L. Kirchner'. Further interventions by Kirchner include title changes to several works and highlights in pencil (crossing out sold paintings for example); five paintings with prices have been noted to the rear wrapper interior.
Kirchner's catalogue is scarce: we locate three copies in Germany (at the Herzogin Anna Amalia Bibliothek in Weimar, the Universitätsbibliothek Johann Christian Senckenberg in Frankfurt and Wurzburg), two copies in Switzerland (at the Universitätsbibliothek in Basel and the Kantonsbiblothek Graubünden in Chur), and three copies in the US (at the Getty, Virginia and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art). The description for the majority of these copies cite only the woodcut for the front cover, suggesting that they are either incomplete and without the rear cover, or that the present example is, in some sense, exceptional.
