MUIM Institut. Moderner Unterricht in Malerei, Graphik, Plastik, Teppich-, Glas-, Metall-Arbeit Malerei in Verbindung mit Architektur. (Original Prospectus)

Kirchner, Ernst Ludwig & Max Pechstein

(Berlin? / Dresden?). (Gärtnersche Buchdruckerei / Heinrich Niescher for the MUIM Institut). 1911
The very rare prospectus for the MUIM Institut, the art school for 'neue Art' founded by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Max Pechstein, with Kirchner's original woodcut for the front cover.

Founded by German Expressionist painters Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Max Pechstein, the Die Brücke-inspired art school - it was considered highly subversive by the Prussian authorities - aimed to teach modern, avant-garde techniques to art students. As can be seen from the title and the text of the prospectus, the programme was extensive and ambitious. A single month of tuition was offered for 60 Marks with a half month at 40 Marks. Individual lessons in the studio were also offered for a month at 100 Marks and 500 Marks for six months. The school, as noted below, was not a success with only two pupils taking up lessons but traditional art schools and the Prussian authorities were a major obstacle with both Kirchner and Pechstein kept under state observation as subversives.

This prospectus is extremely rare and we locate only the Gerlinger copy at auction; the record for that copy suggests that only three copies remain extant. The only other example we locate is that at the Brücke Museum in Berlin.

'When he and Pechstein founded a private art school - the MUIM-Institute (Moderner Unterricht in Malerei or Modern Lessons in Painting) - in the winter of 1911 to help boost their finances, Kirchner’s living and studio space also became a teaching room. Both artists aspired to create a true-to-life alternative to traditional academic training. They tried to draw attention to their venture with specially designed advertisements and posters, but with disappointing results - only two students, Werner Gothein and Hans Gewecke, joined the school.' (Valentia Bay).

'Unterricht mit neuen Mitteln auf neue Art. Skizzieren nach dem Leben, verbunden mit Komposition. Unterricht im Institut oder Atelier des Einzelnen. Institut tagsüber zur Verfügung. Im Sommer Freilichtakt an der See. Fördernde Korrektur aus der Eigenart des Einzelnen heraus ... Das neuzeitliche Leben ist der Ausgangspunkt des Schaffens. DIe Konversation gibt Einblick in die neuen Kunstbestrebungen.'
